At about five-thirty this evening, a thunderstorm "walked" slowly down the valley on "legs of lightning," as the Navajo say. Jagged flashes struck the hills above town. Thunder boomed.

Last week, when 24-year-old Rachel Fredrickson walked on stage as the winner of season 15 of "The Biggest Loser," many viewers gasped. Fredrickson started the show at 260 pounds; she ended up 105, losing 155 pounds, more than half her body weight. She looked anorexic.

Last Wednesday I rushed through my usually quiet morning routine in order to be organized and on-time for my visit to a fifth-grade class at Salida Middle School. I managed on-time; I'm not so sure I was organized.

Last spring, I finished the initial draft of Bless the Birds, the memoir I've been working on about Richard's and my journey with his brain cancer. A journey I hope will show us all how to live with love even in--especially in--the most difficult times.
