Over the course of a week, we hiked up canyons into a desert with tree-sized cactus that waved their arms in welcome and shrub-sized trees, we watched magnificent frigatebirds kite overhead and clouds of butterflies nectar in natural gardens of wildflowers, we snorkled with playful sea lion pups and schools of brilliantly colored tropical fish, we paddled turquoise blue waters accompanied by sea turtles, we dug for clams, we delighted in dolphins leaping out of the water around our panga and flying fish erupting like stars in reverse. We woke to brown pelicans "thwocking" the water of the bay outside our tents as they dove for sardines and fell asleep to the swish, swish of waves on the beach, we ate three fabulous and healthy meals a day plus fresh ceviche from the day's fishing and margaritas for happy hour, we sat on the beach and watched the sun set in a blaze of color over the striped cliffs of Baja mainland miles away, we watched the full moon rise as bats fluttered after insects and great horned owls hooted from the trees in the canyon behind our beach-front camp....

Oh, and we wrote. We wrote daily haiku, we wrote field notes, we wrote short essays, we wrote stories and poems and book proposals. We wrote to think, to dream, and to set a course for the New Year. We wrote our way into the practice of writing as thinking, a way to understand and honor Life and our place in it. We wrote our way into feeling inspired, empowered, and to knowing and using our inner voices.
